Buserelin acetate belongs to the general group of drugs known as hormones or hormone antagonists. It is used to treat advanced prostate and breast cancers.
Buserelin acetate is a synthetic version of the body’s luteinizing hormone–releasing hormone (LHRH), which regulates the amount of testosterone in men and estrogen in women. Buserelin tells the body to stop making testosterone or estrogen, so the blood levels drop. Cancers that are stimulated by testosterone or estrogen stop dividing.
